Brief History

The 12th Regiment was formed in February 1777. Companies recruited men from Hampshire, Berkeley, Botetourt, Dunmore, and Prince Edward counties. State Troops recruited men from Botetourt, Augusta, Hampshire, and Frederick counties and West Augusta District. Field officers at Valley Forge were Colonel James Wood,[1] Lt. Colonel John Neville, and Major George Slaughter.[2]

1st Company - Captain Andrew Waggoner or Waggener - many men from Augusta County
2nd Company - Captain Benjamin Casey - many men from Hampshire County
3rd Company - Captain Stephen Ashby - many men from Hampshire County
4th Company - Captain Michael Bowyer[5] - many men from West Augusta District
5th Company - Captain Matthew Arbuckle - many men from Botetourt County
6th Company - Captain William McKee - many men from Rockbridge County
7th Company - Captain Jonathan Langdon - many men from Dunmore County (Shenandoah County)
8th Company - Captain Joseph Mitchell - many men from Berkeley County or Augusta County
9th Company - Captain Rowland Madison - many men from Prince Edward (perhaps)
10th Company - Captain Thomas Bowyer - many men from Botetourt County
