Brief History

The 131st regiment was organized at New York City and mustered in September 6, 1862.^[1] It was also known as First Regiment, Metropolitan Guard.^[2] They were mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, July 26, 1865.

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles,companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

The companies were recruited under the auspices of the metropolitan police, in New York City; but a portion of Company K came from Smithtown, Suffolk County.
