Brief History

"Units of the Confederate States Army" by Joseph H. Crute, Jr. contains no history for this unit. [1]

Organized by the consolidation of Garland’s Mississippi Cavalry Battalion (three companies), the Cavalry Battalion, Miles’ Louisiana Legion (three companies) Rhodes’ Mississippi Partisan rangers Company and Mullen’s Louisiana Scouts and Sharpshooters Company an September 14, 1863. However, Company A, Cavalry Battalion, Miles’ Louisiana Legion refused to recognize its assignment to this regiment as Company E and maintained its independence.[2]

Company A - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Prestonsburg, Floyd County,Virginia.
Company B - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky.
Company C - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Pike County, Kentucky and Buchanan County, Virginia.
Company D - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Piketon, Pike County, Kentucky.
Company E - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Wolfe County, Kentucky.
Company F - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Buchanan County, Virginia.
Company G - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Buchanan County, Virginia.
Company H - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Buchanan County, Virginia.
Company I - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Buchanan County, Virginia. Company I was organized on November 25, 1863.
Company K - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Liberty Hill, Carroll County and Jeffersonville, Tazewell County, Virginia. Company K was organized on January 22, 1864. Regiment disbanded in early 1865.
Company L - Many men from Kentucky mustered in from Alexandria, Carroll County, and Pike County, Kentucky.
