Brief History

The 173rd Regiment, New York Infantry was organized at Brooklyn, N. Y., October and November, 1862 as one of the 4th Metropolitan Guard. It was also known as the 4th National Guard. The regiment was organized at Riker's island, and were mustered in there for 3 years, November 10, 1862.They were moved to Savannah, Ga., June 30-July 7, 1865, and  mustered out October 18, 1865,[1][2] under Colonel Peck, Lt. Colonel Holbrook and Major Rogers.[3]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

The companies were recruited under the auspices of the police departments of the cities of New York City  and Brooklyn, principally in those cities; Company B was, however, originally intended for the 87th Infantry, which was discontinued September 6. 1862.[4]

See the Regiment Roster, for listing of individuals, their company and their involvement.
