Brief History

The 2nd Battalion, Mississippi State Cavalry, also called Harris's, was organized for State service, in the fall of 1863 in Northeast Mississippi. It was later reorganized under the direction of General Gholson and transferred to the Confederate States service May 1, 1864. Major Thomas W. Harris was the commander. ^[1]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
