Brief History
40th Infantry Regiment, organized at Mobile, Alabama, in May, 1862, recruited its companies in Perry, Sumter, Morgan, Covington, Pickens, Colbert, Mobile, and Choctaw counties. Only a handful surrendered on April 26, 1865.[1]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
Companies by County:
- Company A - many men from Sumter County
- Company B - many men from Pickens County
- Company C - many men from Sumter County
- Company D - many men from Choctaw County
- Company E - many men from Choctaw County
- Company F - many men from Choctaw County and Mobile County
- Company G - many men from Pickens County
- Company H - many men from Mobile County and Perry County
- Company I - many men from Mobile County and Covington County
- Company K - many men from Mobile County
The company rosters and counties men came from are in the book The 40th Alabama Infantry: Confederate States Army by Ann Blomquist[2].FHL book 976.1 M2ba
