Record Description

This collection will include records from 1802-2005.

This collection contains cards of cemetery inscriptions from many cemeteries throughout Australia. The majority of the cemeteries are in Queensland, but there are some in New South Wales, Norfolk Island, Tasmania, and Western Australia. Some cards include information culled from local newspapers. The file was the product of many years of work by genealogists

These records are handwritten transcriptions, so there may be transcription errors.

Cemetery records often give more information than church burial records, and may include the deceased’s name, age, date of death or burial, birth year or date of birth, and sometimes marriage information. They may also provide clues about an ancestor’s military service, religion, occupation, place of residence at time of death, or membership in an organization.

These records are useful in identifying children who died young, or women who were not recorded in family or government documents. They are helpful in establishing family relationships and locating family members.

How to Use the Record

This section provides information on how to search the collection and some tips on how to find records.

When searching:
As you are searching it is helpful to know such information as your ancestor's given name and surname and some identifying information such as estimated death year.

Search the Collection

To search the collection image by image:
⇒ Select "Browse through images" on the initial collection page
⇒ Select the "Letter" category
⇒ Select the "Namerange" category which takes you to the images.

Search the collection by image comparing the information with what you already know about your ancestors to determine if the image relates to them. You may need to look at several images and compare the information about the individuals listed in those images to your ancestors to make this determination.

Tips to Keep in Mind

There may be more than one person in the records with the same name. You may not be sure of your own ancestor’s name. Your ancestor may have used different names or variations of their name throughout their life.
