From FamilySearch Wiki
- Not to be confused with Beaufort County 1800-present. From 1800 to 1868 that Beaufort County was also known by the alias of Beaufort District.
In 1785 four counties were formed within the overarching Beaufort District: Granville (1785), Hilton, Lincoln, and Shrewsbury. These counties never became functional, and were abolished in 1798. They were counties in name only. See the 1785 South Carolina Map.
In 1800, South Carolina abolished overarching administrative court districts and went with the county-only concept, However they often called the remaining counties, districts until 1868, after the Civil War.
