Subagencies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs were usually smaller field offices operating much like agencies and subservient to a larger field offices such as agencies, superintendencies or area offices. Prior to 1834, it was a common practice in the Office of Indian Affairs to appoint subagents as assistants to agents. Subsequent to 1834, subagencies were more commonly independent, reporting to superintendencies or area offices for smaller jurisdictions not justifying a full agency.
