Trouble getting editor to show up

Yes, I am inserting something higher than the item that has been bumped a few weeks. This seems more important. For the past couple of days, I have been noticing a couple of problems with editing pages.

  1. The editor never seems to show up even if sitting around for quite a while. If I log off, leave it for a while, log on, then I will get the editor at least once.
  2. When the editor shows up, it sometimes does not show all of the text that it should show.

This seems to be something very bad going on and makes it very difficult for me to edit. I have tried it on Firefox and Safari. Thomas Lerman 22:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

This needs to be reported in the Technical Support link on the bottom of all wiki pages. Who will report it? Ritcheymt 20:03, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
One workaround for now is to click Preferences on the nav bar, go to the Edit tab, and uncheck the option to show the Javascript toolbar. Then save. That'll make it so that when you click Edit on a page, the FCK Editor won't try to open at all. You'll go to WikiText view and be able to edit that way. Ritcheymt 20:22, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

MEETING NOTES: I saw that Sammy has, like me, got in the habit of right-mouse clicking. I do not feel we should get people in the habit of having to do that. Steve mentioned that it is possible to get back with the Back button and the interwiki link idea is to bring the wikis closer together. Jimmy suggests writing pros & cons on both methods, which that has been started in the template discussion page. This will allow reading, thinking, pondering, etc. before responding. External links: Keep status quo until 70% overturn

Painful experience in wikiproject management has taught us that after making a stylistic decision, we must enforce that decision until 70% of the users overrule it. The community reached verbal consensus on this issue long before we had a MOS page. (Unfortunately, since we decided this issue before we had a MOS page, the decision was never recorded in MOS; hence the present confusion.) In fact, I believe we decided this all the way back when we were still using Plone (before MediaWiki).

The decision was for all links that lead outside FamilySearch to spawn a new window. I don't mind us having the discussion again, but until that initial decision is overturned by a 70% to 30% vote, all external links (including those from templates) need to spawn a new window. It is confusing to users if we have some external links spawn a new window and others use the current window. In the meantime, the MOS needs to be edited to reflect this rule. Linking Research Wiki to maps

A couple of weeks ago the community meeting discussed linking to maps. Today I was reviewing http://labs.familysearch.org when I notice a item dated 13 Aug 2009 http://maps.familysearch.org/

At the moment the only dataset included seems to be England Jurisdictions 1851. I found that one of the options built-in to this resource is a search on FamilySearch Research Wiki. Does anyone know the development path for of this site? By the looks of it this is just the sort of mapping resource that will add value to the wiki. --Steve 18:30, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Meeting Notes: The views expressed during the meeting were positive about what http://maps.familysearch.org/ has to offer http://wiki.familysearch.org/. Some people who had used the site in mid/late August noticed that extra features and more data (although limited to England) had already been added. The consensus view was that we hope Michael (on reviewing this meeting) will be able to find out about the development path for the site. It is hoped that http://maps.familysearch.org/ will extend to every country and that ways can be developed (likely through templates) to link from FSWiki to http://maps.familysearch.org/. --Steve 22:15, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Just to make sure, do you realize that the site that you mentioned just sends the user out to Google? It looks like someone is working getting the Wiki into multiple languages. Is that satisfactory? Thomas Lerman 18:38, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
My suggestion would be not to replicate the translate tools in the Wiki . . . in other words, not to put the forms anywhere in the Wiki. If you go to the geocities link, you will find it only has English & German. Google Translate allows MANY more language translations. Rather than having to change the form every time Google adds a language, I would suggest those pages that may "need" some ability to translate have a link to a single translation tools article. From there, the user may choose from the list of tools (external links). To me, copying the form into a Wiki article makes about as much sense as copying a search form out of Ancestry (or wherever) and putting it into the Wiki. We should be pointing people to resources wherever they may be, not trying to replicate small parts of those resources. Thomas Lerman 06:12, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

At the end of the 08Sep2009 meeting, we came up with a proposed solution for the question on Worldwide vs. Regional libraries. I believe we wanted Dsammy's input to make sure it satisfies his needs.
