In 1974 the former county of Cumberland was incorporated within the current county of Cumbria (which also includes the former county of Westmoreland, the Furness area of Lancashire and the Yorkshire parish of Sedbergh)
- Records for north Cumberland (i.e. north of the River Derwent) are held at the Carlise Record Office
- Records for south Cumberland (i.e. south of the River Derwent) are held at the Whitehaven Record Office
The Cumbria Archive Service also has archive centres in Barrow and Kendal
