History
In 1882 the Northern Pacific Railroad built its transcontinental rail line along the east bench of Lake Pend Oreille. A veterinarian railroad employee with the last name of Hope is where the name came from. In 1901 the Hope Lumber Company built a sawmill near the lakeshore, the community was built around the sawmill and was call East Hope after the City of Hope.
