In 1882 the Northern Pacific Railroad built its transcontinental rail line along the east bench of Lake Pend Oreille. A veterinarian railroad employee with the last name of Hope is where the name came from. In 1901 the Hope Lumber Company built a sawmill near the lakeshore, the community was built around the sawmill and was call East Hope after the City of Hope.

There are no copies of East Hope newspapers found in the collections of the Idaho State Archives in Boise, Idaho, but papers of nearby towns/cities that are in the Archives could be of interest to East Hope residents.
