English civil registration certificates offer a gold of information regarding an ancestor's life in the British military. The birth certificate can provide rank and regiment of the father on his child's record of birth. Also by watching the place of birth section there can be reference made to a barracks. Similar information will appear on marriage certificates. The father's of the bride or groom may have reference to a military rank or regiment or the groom himself will have such a designation. Death certificates may have information on the deceased occupation as a soldier or sailor or marine. A service man's wife may even have a reference to her husband's military profession such statement may appear as "wife of a pensioner". By paying attention to these references a military career can be discovered for an ancestor that might otherwise go unknown.
