FamilySearch Center - Joseph Smith Memorial Building
The FamilySearch Center opened in 1993 and is housed in the restored Joseph Smith Memorial Building, once the grand Hotel Utah. This building is next to Temple Square. It not only captures the elegant craftsmanship and beauty of times past, it now carries messages of how important the past is to the future.
The FamilySearch Center is a place for tourists and locals to discover, preserve and share their past. Free assistance is available to seek out Ellis Island records, pioneer ancestry, and millions of records from many nations throughout the world at FamilySearch.org

Five-Minute Challenge Kiosk
Visitors can learn how to find an ancestor’s record in five minutes. This challenge is also available in ten languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, English and Swedish.

Walk along the pier at our Ellis Island display, and pose for a free souvenir photograph.
Records of Our Lives Exhibits
Learn about the impact that records and record keeping have made throughout the ages as you browse this interactive exhibit. The exhibit is split into three sections: Records of the Ancient Past: 4000 B.C. – A.D. 800, Records of the Middle Ages: A.D. 800 – A.D. 1500 and Records of the Common Man: A.D. 1500 – Present.
Let our expert facilitators guide you through a dynamic experience in family history or lead your own group. We can accommodate groups of all sizes. It’s a great place for tour, family, Scout, youth, or other groups. For reservations, call 1-801-240-4673.
Family Search Stations
Discover, preserve and share your family history with the assistance of helpful volunteers. Enjoy free access to family history subscription websites, and receive information on steps you can take to continue your research when you return home.
Join your children in a variety of fun activities to help discover your past. Go on scavenger hunts, do a tombstone rubbing, design your personal coat of arms, translate a message written in hieroglyphics, and more.
