Wiki Project New York Tasks - Church Records: Intro task

Description

To add an introduction to the church records heading and instructions on how to find church records.

Instructions

1. Copy the following template and paste it in wiki text under the heading Church Records:
{{Template:NYChurch|Onondaga|541001}}

2. In the template, replace the county, Onondaga with the name of the county you are working on.

3. In the template, change the numbers listed with the number you obtain from doing the following:

While in the new FHLC on FamilySearch.org, select any record under the county's "vital records" topic.
1. Put your county into the search "For" field, i.e. Madison, New York.
2. Click on the county name as it appears beneath what you are typing.
3. Select the vital records at the end of the section.
4. Select any record listed in the section.
5. Under the "Subjects" heading select the link called "New York, (your county)– Vital records".
6. Then click on the blue subject link (i.e. New York, Madison - Vital Records).
7. In the upper left-hand corner you will find a heading titled "Search" containing the term Subject Number. Under that is the heading "For" with a number. Copy the number in the "For" field.
8.Paste the number in template listed in 1. above replacing the number field in the template.

NOTE: The template links to the FHLC and will show any additional records that are added to the FHLC in the future.

4. Below the template, add the following in bold: Online Church Records Abstracts

Example

Church records are good substitutes for birth, marriage, and death information and are most often found on a local city/town or county level.  Published and manuscript church records can be found at public, university, and private libraries.
