Description

The purpose of this task is to add the links to the cemetery table on Ohio county pages.

This task is beginner task and requires basic experience with copying and pasting in wikitext.

  • Go to the top right-hand corner of the page within the the white area.
  • Locate the word Print or the icon of a printer. Click on the icon.

Instructions

1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose a county to edit.

2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task. Sign-up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart below.

3. For each county, you will add information to the county page by editing in wikitext. Read the general instructions then follow the wikitext link to continued task directions about using wikitext to edit this project.

  • If you have questions about editing, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.

4. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.

Wikitext Editing Instructions

1. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page.

2. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password. Find the sign-in area in the top right-hand corner of the page.

3. Scroll to the heading Cemeteries.

4. Open the Cemeteries heading for editing by clicking on the pen in square on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the heading title.

5. Click on the word wikitext in the toolbox at the top left of the edit box.

6. The cemetery information is in table format. This task requires that you change some Internet addresses (URL's) to take the user directly to Mahoning County cemetery records on the Internet. Some of the addresses are the same for all counties and will not need any editing.

7. Six links in the table require editing.

  • A new row in the table begins after each |- .
  • URL's are usually found between [ ] signs.
  • Within the [ ] signs and after the URL there is a space and then the wording which appears within the table.
  • The Family History Library;link is a template, which is similar, but coded a little differently. Instructions for using the template are included in this task. 
Findagrave

1. After the second |- look for the URL for Findagrave. In the following instructions you will open a new browser window and search for the Findagrave county number for your chosen county.

a. Open a new tab at the top right of your screen to a blank Internet page. The new tab will look like a blank tab or it will have a plus sign in it. Click inside the empty tab to open the new page. To toggle between your county page and the new Internet page you open, click your mouse inside the tab for either page.
b. Copy this URL http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cs
c. Paste it into the address bar in the box at the top of the new Internet page you just opened.
d. In search boxes type in United States, New Jersey and your county.
e. In the URL address bar at the top of the page, look for a county number which will be at the end of the address and after the letters cnty.
f. Highlight and copy this number or write it down.
g. Return to your county wiki page. Open for editing in the upper right-hand corner. Open wikitext in the upper left-hand corner.
f. Look for the Findagrave URL after the second |- and locate at the end of the URL the letter cnty and a number.
g. Delete the four numbers in the URL after cnty and replace them with county numbers you found in step "e".
h. Skip to the last line before the next |- . This is another reference to Findagrave. Repeat step g.
i. Findagrave is complete.
j. Scroll to near the bottom of the page to the summary box. Add a sentence something like "Changed findagrave link to go to Atlantic County."
k. Save page.
l. Continue to Family History Library in the task list on this page.
Family History Library

The link to the Family History Library is called a template. Open Cemeteries on your county page for editing. Open wikitext. Within the wikitext find the template which looks like

It is between the two Findagrave links you worked on in the previous task.

1. You are going to change the numbers you see in the template.

2. Locate the new number you need by completing the following steps:

a. Open a new tab at the top right of your screen to a blank Internet page. The new tab will look like a blank tab or it will have a plus sign in it. Click inside the empty tab to open the new page. To toggle between your county page and the new Internet page you open, click your mouse inside the tab for either page. 
b. On the new page to to FHLC on FamilySearch.org:
c. Put your county into the search "For" field, i.e. Atlantic, New Jersey.
d. Click on the county name as it appears beneath what you are typing, and hit the Search button.
e. Select the cemeteries topic from the list.
f. Select any record listed in the cemeteries topic.
g. In the cemetery record that you selected, under the "Subjects" heading select the link called "New Jersey, (your county)– Cemeteries".
h. Click on this blue subject link (i.e. New Jersey, Atlantic - Cemeteries).
i. In the upper left corner you will find a heading titled "Search" containing the term Subject Number. Under that is the heading "For" with a number. Copy the number in the "For" field.
j.Paste the number in template listed in #1 above replacing the number field in the template.

3. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added FHL link".

4. Save page.

5.Continue to Worldcat in the task list on this page.


Worldcat

1. Open Cemeteries on your county page for editing. Open wikitext. Within the wikitext find the URL which looks like

2. Highlight the word Atlantic within the URL.

3. Type the name of your county in the place of Mahoning.

4. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added Worldcat link".

5. Save page.

6. Continue to Interment.net task list on this page.

Interment.net

1. Open Cemeteries on your county page for editing. Open wikitext. Within the wikitext find the URL which looks like

2. Highlight the word atlantic within the URL.

3. Type the name of your county in the place of atlantic.

4. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added Interment.net link".

5. Save page.

6. Continue to USGenWeb task list on this page.

USGenWeb

1. Open Cemeteries on your county page for editing. Open wikitext. Within the wikitext find the URL which looks like

2. Highlight the word atlantic within the URL.

3. Type the name of your county in the place of atlantic.

4. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added USGenWeb link".

5. Save page.

6. Continue to Epodunk task list on this page.

Epodunk

1. Open Cemeteries on your county page for editing. Open wikitext. Within the wikitext find the URL which looks like

2. Locating your county information on Epodunki

a. Open a new tab at the top right of your screen to a blank Internet page. The new tab will look like a blank tab or it will have a plus sign in it. Click inside the empty tab to open the new page. To toggle between your county page and the new Internet page you open, click your mouse inside the tab for either page.
b. Copy this URL http://www.epodunk.com/counties/nj_county.html
c. Paste it into the address bar in the box at the top of the new Internet page you just opened.
d. Click on your county name.
f. Look at the URL in the address box at the top of the page. After the word "Index=" copy the number you see.

3. Return to the cemetery table you were editing in step 1.

4. Within the Epodunk URL you located in step 1, replace the number you see after the word local=
Use the number you copied in step 2.

5. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added Epudunk link".

6. Save page.


Finalize the Page

1. Click on the blue links you just added.

2. If any of these links do not work, please contact FamilySearch at the number listed in Description above.

3. Follow the directions in the Assignment Chart section below to report your completed task.

Assignment Chart

If you are accepting this task:

1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your county of choice.
4. Not all counties are included in the chart below. If your county is not listed, this task is not needed for your county.
5. Type 4 tildes (~). This symbol is located on the upper left-hand part of your keyboard, next to the number 1. The ~~~~ is an electronic signature and will leave your user name and date when you signed.
6. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Selected Adams County for adding Probate intro".
7. Click on the box "Save Page".
8. You are now signed up to complete this task.

  • Follow the same instructions as accepting the task, except place your cursor in the correct county box under the heading Date Completed. Change your summary sentence to something like, "Completed Adams County for societies."
