Protecting and unprotecting pages require moderator permission.

A protected page is a page where normal users are prevented from editing and/or moving at all. A user with moderator permission can edit or move a protected page. A moderator can protect a page or unprotect the page to lift the restriction.

There are several reasons why a particular page might be protected:

  • On public wikis, pages may be protected because they have been repeatedly targeted with vandalism or moved to bad titles, or where it is believed that vandalism or page moves would have a severe impact.
  • On corporate wikis, pages may be protected when they contain statements which have been approved by management, and policy dictates that those statements can't be changed without a certain approval process.

Protecting a page

You can designate a page as a protected page by clicking the 'Protect page' tab, and supplying a brief reason why you are protecting the page. Once protected you should add the template {{protected}} to the top of the page to indicate it's new status.

There are several reasons why a particular page might be protected.

On public wikis, a protected page is usually one which has been repeatedly targeted with vandalism, or where it is believed that any vandalism would have a severe impact. On corporate wikis, a page may be protected when the content has been frozen via an approval process.

However there are also many good reasons for not protecting pages. As a moderator you must make this choice and use your power responsibly.

Request a page be protected

Moderators can protect pages so any contributor can request that a page be protected. The Moderator will protect the page by using the template {{protect}} on the page and add the reason why the page is protected to the discussion/talk page.

Page protection limits collaboration on the wiki content, and should be avoided where possible.
