History
In 1862 gold had been discovered in the Boise Basin. Prospectors poured into the area by the thousands. Overnight Idaho City became the largest town in the territory. This boom brought business to the area, saloons, opera and theater houses, pool halls and drug stores opened for business. Whiskey was cheaper than water. Men were armed at all times and quickly defend themselves. The atmosphere of lawlessness did not stop the city from flourishing. With in a few years fortunes were no longer to be made, the prospectors left in droves. The Fire in 1865, wiped out eighty percent of the buildings in town. There were more fires in 1867, 1868, and 1871.
