Regiments 1st through 5th

  • 1st Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Seven Companies, "A" to "G," organized at Alton, Madison County, Illinois, and mustered in July 3, 1861.
    Mustered out July 14, 1862.
    Companies "I," "H" and "K" were not mustered with the Regiment and never served with it. They also organized at Alton, Illinois and mustered out in 1861.
  • 1st Regiment, Illinois Light Artillery
    First known as Smith's Chicago Light Artillery.
    Entered State service for three months, April 17, 1861.
    Mustered out at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, July 3, 1865.
    Thereafter Batteries were organized and mustered in at various times and places.
    Batteries also mustered out at various times and places.
  • 2nd Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at Camp Butler, Ill., and mustered in August 12, 1861. Mustered out November 22, 1865. Discharged at Springfield, Ill., January 3, 1866.
  • 2nd Regiment, Illinois Light Artillery
    Organized at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, and mustered into State service May 23, 1861.
    Duty in District of Southeast Missouri until July, 1863.) Battery mustered out July 28, 1865.
  • 4th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois, and mustered in September 26, 1861. Consolidated with 14th Illinois Cavalry June 14, 1865.

    Organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, November 19, 1861.
    Mustered out at Selma, Alabama, November 5, and discharged at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illnois, November 20, 1865.
  • 7th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered in October 13, 1861.
    Mustered out October 20, 1865, and discharged at Camp Butler, Illinois, November 17, 1865.
  • 8th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois, for three years' service July 25, 1861.
    Mustered out at Baton Rouge May 4 and discharged at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, May 13, 1866.
  • 9th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and mustered in November 30, 1861.
    Mustered out at Selma, Alabama October 31, 1865.

  • 10th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois Illinois July 29, 1861.
    Mustered out July 4, 1865, and discharged at Chicago, July 11, 1865.
  • 10th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (3 months, 1861)
    Regiment formed from first four Companies reporting at Springfield, Illinois April 20, 1861, which were ordered to Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois April 22. Regiment fully organized by the addition of three other Infantry Companies and three Artillery Companies and mustered in for three months' service by Capt. John Pope, U. S. A., April 29, 1861. Attached to Prentiss' Brigade and on garrison duty at Cairo, Illinois till July.
    Mustered out July 29, 1861.
  • 11th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois August 1, 1861.
    Mustered out July 10, 1865, and discharged at Camp Butler, Illinois July 18, 1865.
  • 12th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Companies "A," "B," "C," "D," "E" and "G" organized at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, and mustered in February 24, 1862.
    Mustered out May 29, 1866.
  • 12th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois August 1, 1861.
    Mustered out July 10, 1865, and discharged at Camp Butler, Illinois July 18, 1865.
  • 13th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Eight Companies organized at Camp Douglass, Illinois, October 30, 1861, to February 20, 1862. Mustered out August 31, 1865.
  • 13th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, and mustered into State service April 21, 1861. Mustered into U. S. service by Capt. John Pope May 24, 1861, being the first three years Regiment from Illinois mustered into U. S. service.
    Mustered out June 18, 1864.

    Organized at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, and mustered in 1st and 2nd Battalions, January 7, 1863. 3rd Battalion February 6, 1863.
    Mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, July 31, 1865.
  • 14th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, and mustered in May 25, 1861.
    Mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, September 18, 1865.
  • 15th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois, and mustered in May 24, 1861.
    Mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, September 16, 1865.
  • 16th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at Camp Butler, near Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, January to April, 1863 probably at Decatur, Alabama.
  • 16th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, and mustered in May 24, 1861.
    Moved to Louisville, Kentucky, June 12. Mustered out July 8,1865 probably Louisville, Kentucky.
  • 17th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry
    Organized at St. Charles, Kane County, Illinois, and 8 Companies mustered in January 28, 1864. Four Companies mustered in February 12, 1864.
    Mustered out Companies "C," "E," "I" and "M," November 23, and rest of Regiment December 15 to 22, 1865 probably Kansas.
  • 18th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Aurora, Illinois, and mustered into State service May 19, and into U. S. service May 28, 1861.
    Non-Veterans mustered out May 28, 1864. Regiment mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, December 16, and discharged, at Camp Butler, Illinois, December 31, 1865.

Regiments 19th through 26th

  • 19th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Four Chicago Companies mustered into State service at Camp Yates May 4, 1861. Regiment organized at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and mustered in June 17, 1861.
    Moved to Chicago June 8-17. Mustered out July 9, 1864; expiration of term.
  • 20th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Joliet, Will, Illinois, and mustered in June 13, 1861.
    Mustered out July 16 and discharged at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, July 24, 1865.
  • 21st Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, and mustered in June 28, 1861.
    Mustered out at San Antonio, Texas, December 16, and discharged at Camp Butler, Illinois, January 18, 1866.
  • 22nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois, and mustered in June 25, 1861.
    Mustered out July 7, 1864, expiration of term.
  • 23rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and mustered in June 15, 1861.
    Mustered out at Richmond, Virginia, July 24, and discharged at Chicago, Illinois, July 30,1865.
  • 26th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
    Organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered in August 31, 1861.
    Moved to Louisville, Kentucky, June, and duty there until July. Mustered out July 20, and discharged at Springfield, Illinois, July 28, 1865.
