The county covers the largest island of England situated off the south coast of Hampshire and is separated from the mainland by what is known as the Solent.

Civil Districts
When civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1837, the Isle of Wight was a seperate registration district, containing several parishes. The index to the civil records gives the name of the district where an event took place.
