History

Brief Timeline

1601:Juan de Onate, has contact with the Kansa tribe

1825: The tribe cede land in Missouri to the United States, move to a reservation in Kansas

1846: removed to a reservation at Council Grove on the Neosha River

1852: The Kansas tribe was living in northern part of Indian Territory which became Kansas and Nebraska, in 1852

1862: Homestead Act allowed white settlers to move into Kansas and Nebraska

1873: removed to Oklahoma

Agencies

The Kansa Tribein Kansas was under the jurisdiction of the Fort Leavenworth Agency,1824-47; Osage River Agency, 1847-51; Potawatomi Agency 1851-55 and the  Kansas Agency, 1855-76. While in Kansas they were under the Central Superintendency

The tribe in Oklahoma was uncer the jurisdiction of the Neosho Agency 1874; and the Osage Agency 1874-80.

Frederick Webb Hodge, in his Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico, gave a more complete history of the Kansa tribe, with estimations of the population of the tribe at various time periods.
