History

In 1895, the Lac du Flambeau Boarding School was opened under the La Pointe Agency. In 1907, Lac du Flambeau was made independent and given agency status.

In 1927, the La Pointe Agency, Laona Agency, Red Cliff Agency, and Mackinac Agency were all consolidated into the Lac du Flambeau Agency and it became responsible for all the Chippewa and Potawatomi Indians in Wisconsin and Michigan. In 1933, the Hayward School was added to Lac du Flambeau, as well.

In 1936, the Lac du Flambeau was superceded by the Great Lakes Agency[1].

Records

Many of the historical records of this agency are housed in the Great Lakes Regional Archives of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Chicago[2], including:

  • Chippewa census rolls, 1878-1931
  • Student case files, 1910-1917
  • Heirship case files, 1920-1932
  • Family medical histories, 1930
  • And other financial and administrative records, 1882-1949

Microfilm copies of ...Narrative and Statistical Reports... for the Lac du Flambeau Agency, 1908-1935, are included in National Archives Microcopy M1011, Rolls 75-76[3], available in the National Archives system and in the collections of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, beginning with their microfilm numbers 1724293-1724294. Reports for some years are missing.

Annual Indian Census Rolls were taken at this agency for 1910 thru 1935. These rolls have been microfilmed by the National Archives as part of their Microcopy Number M595, rolls 229 thru 232[4]. Copies of these records are also available at the National Archives, their Regional Archives, and at the Family History Library and its family history centers (their microfilm numbers 576918-576921). These census rolls are also available online at Ancestry.com's subscription web site.
