Mailing Lists at RootsWeb - AlabamaEdit This Page

From FamilySearch Wiki

This wiki page includes a listing of Alabama genealogy mailing lists with information about searching, browsing, subscribing, unsubscribing, posting and volunteering to adopt a list.

Genealogy Mailing Lists are useful genealogists who wish to review the archive of what has been sent in email messages to participants and to consider posting a new topic for discussion among like-minded researchers who have also subscribed. The goal is to make connections with experienced researchers who may know critical things about how to do research in this area. It is possible to find a previously unknown distant cousin who may have accumulated additional information on that side of the family tree. After all, only one person can inherit that all-important family bible.

Previous Posts
It is possible to search by any fairly unique word that may have been typed in a previous mailing list posting, by searching the archive of the RootsWeb Mailing List in question.

It is also possible browse previous mailing list postings which aids in understanding the tone of postings before deciding to subscribe to a list.

The search and browse functions of RootsWeb Mailing Lists are available when connected to the internet by viewing the mailing list's page referenced in the table below.

Subscribing
All RootsWeb Mailing Lists are administered automatically by computer software (known as the ListMaster) that expects participants to communicate using specific jargon. Appropriate verbiage is located on the page for each mailing list referenced in the table below. Click on the list name you'd like to join and your web browser will go to the RootsWeb page that describes the details of that mailing list.

It is possible to subscribe in L (list) or D (digest) mode. Digest mode is not abbreviated, merely consolidated. This means that instead of perhaps five individual email postings, you may receive one email, with the five bunched together. This varies depending on the length of each posting. Longer postings may trigger the digest mode to send out an email after only 2-3 postings.

Posting
New subscribers will receive a confirmation email, which explains how to initiate a post to the mailing list. It is a good idea to "lurk" for a week or two to gage how formal or informal the postings before addressing your email to the ListMaster software at RootsWeb for distribution among other list members.

Unsubscribing
Remember it is a computer that will process your unsubscribe request, so follow the directions on the mailing list page.

Volunteer Administrators
A volunteer has adopted each mailing list at RootsWeb. The administrator's job is to take care of spammers and flamers, not to answer specific research questions.

Mailing List Help
RootsWeb provides detailed help for changing your email address and other problem solving at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/

Adopting or Requesting a Mailing List
If you'd like to participate as a volunteer administrator, see: http://resources.rootsweb.com/adopt/

Caution
When making any posting on the web, do not give out your snail mail, telephone number or credit cards. It is a good idea to create a free email account at Gmail.com or Yahoo.com just for sending and receiving genealogy email.
