Known Issues

Question #1: Some records are missing. Where can they be viewed?
Answer #1: Most missing records are available on microfilm. See Ordering Microfilm or Microfiche for instructions on ordering microfilm as well as finding a local FamilySearch Center where you can view the films. For a way to determine what digital records are likely to be found within a collection or how to find missing images elsewhere, see Article 56000, How to use Film Notes in the Catalog to determine the content of a final browse point in Historical Records.

Question #3: When I click on the link in the Catalog stating “Mexico, Catholic Church Records are available online, click here”, I cannot find the records I am looking for. Where are the missing images located?
Answer #3: Although there exists a super collection called Mexico, Catholic Church Records, many Catholic Church records have been subdivided by a State or District of Mexico into their own collections. These separate Catholic Church collections by States or District include:

  • Mexico, Chiapas, Catholic Church Records, 1558-1978
  • Mexico, Distrito Federal, Catholic Church Records, 1886-1933 *
  • Mexico, Guanajuato, Catholic Church Records, 1576-1984
  • Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1995 *
  • Mexico, Michoacán, Catholic Church Records, 1649-1909 *
  • Mexico, Morelos, Catholic Church Records, 1598-1969 *
  • Mexico, Nayarit, Catholic Church Records, 1596-1967
  • Mexico, Oaxaca, Catholic Church Records, 1559-1988
  • Mexico, Puebla, Catholic Church Records, 1545-1970 *
  • Mexico, Querétaro, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1970 *
  • Mexico, San Luis Potosí, Catholic Church Records, 1586-1970
  • Mexico, State of Mexico, Catholic Church Records *

  • Mexico, Veracruz, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1970 *
  • Mexico, Yucatán, Catholic Church Records, 1543-1977

  * These collections still have records located within the Mexico, Catholic Church Records collection. That is to say, not all of the records have been transferred into their individual collections to date. You will need to check both collections for records. There are no Mexico Catholic Church records online for the Mexican State of Quintana Roo.

Question #4: Some pages appear to be missing. Are these pages available to view?
Answer#4: This problem is due to the condition of the original records. Pages were filmed in the order they appeared in the original record. Pages can usually be found by moving forward or backward arrows several images. Ordering the film may or may not help with this problem. In addition, Aguascalientes > Aguascalientes > Sagrario > Bautismos, 1701-1709 images 13-37 are backwards and upside down. You can order the Film 299424 and adjust the film position for viewing if a mirror does not work for you.

Question #5: There is no Mexican State named Albacete. Where do the records belong?
Answer #5: All of the Event Types and Year Ranges (browse points) and their images in both paths Albacete > Casas de Juan Nuñez > San Pedro Apóstol, and Hidalgo > Chapulhuacán > San Pedro Apóstol (Casas de Juan Nuñez, Albacete) should be relocated in a new path Hidalgo > Chapulhuacán > San Pedro Apóstol. The corresponding Catalog entry and Film Note would be in Parish registers of baptisms, confirmations, marriages and marriage petitions, and deaths from Chapulhuacán, Hidalgo, Mexico; and Archivo Diocesano de Huejutla (FILM #s 1667762, 1667763, 1667764, 1667765).

Question #6: There is no Mexican State named Baja California Norte. Where do the records belong?
Answer #6: The state of Baja California in Mexico is often called Baja California Norte, but the official name is just Baja California. The affected paths include:
1. Baja California Norte > Ensenada > Purísimo Corazón de María;
2. Baja California Norte > Santa Gertrudis > Misión de Santa Gertrudis; and
3. Baja California Norte > San Francisco de Borja > Misión de San Francisco de Borja
In addition, the town of San Francisco de Borja should read as San Borja. The misnomer also affects Batch M645771 (Marriages listed as Event Place: Baja California Norte, Mexico).
