United States Nebraska Nebraska Gazetteers

Record Synopsis

A gazetteer is defined as "a geographical dictionary."^[1] Gazetteers typically list the names of towns, settlements, villages, districts, rivers, and mountains within a specified region. They may also provide geographical description, historical data, and biographical information about early residents. Gazetteers can be helpful for finding places that may or may not show up on a map. They are also useful for determining jurisdictions where records might be kept. Online Resources

The Nebraska State Historical Society has created a database entitled 1890/1911 Gazetteer Index. Researchers are able to search by Name, City, and/or Year (1890 or 1911) for listings. Entries include name, city, year, page and reel number.
