Most synagogue records have not been centralized, so you must write to the local congregation. The Center for Jewish History offers a free online up-to-date guide (2012) on how to locate New York City synagogue records.
The Museum of Family History has compiled lists of synagogues for the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan (1869-1933), Queens and Richmond (Staten Island) boroughs in New York City.[1]
