African American Research Workshop
  • SFBAJGS = San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society
  • AAGSNC = African American Genealogial Society of Northern California

African American Research Workshop - Instructor, Genealogist Alvis Ward Jr. - This is an ongoing free hands-on research workshop comprised of African Americans, also referred to as Black or Afro-American, or those who harmonize with Sub-Saharan Africa, with ancestry, citizenship, or residency in the United States. The workshop is an interactive exchange of research tools, methods and systems, and discussions necessary for progress at individual levels of family histories and genealogies impacted by the 16th Century removal of Africans to America as slaves. No pre-registration is required. For additional information E-Mail :nextleveldna@gmail.com Workshop will not meet during the summer but will resume in September.

Beginning Photo Scanning & Photo Restoration - Instructor, Barbara Stack - Very basic class in the basics of digital images. Barbara Stack will review:

  • the most common still image file types (jpg, tif (tiff) png gif)
  • the color gamut, which is group of colors out of the range of possible colors which can be held in an image file, or captured on a camera, or displayed on a screen
  • resolution, usually expressed in number of pixels (color dots) wide by number of pixels tall

She will then deliberately degrade, trash, ruin and spoil some nice photos to illustrate how these elements interact. There will be a question and answer period at the end.

Better Research Strategies - Instructor, Genealogist Bonnie Matteson - If you are feeling frustrated as you search for ancestors, this class will help you establish a plan to find more information, understand it better and create an authentic, documented family tree. This class will include planning research strategies, tips for using the major search engines and their filtering systems to better focus your online hits. We will discuss documenting and analyzing results and resources both on and offline. With proper research you can recreate the true story of your family.
