Parish Number:  Many years ago the Scottish government assigned each parish a reference number for the purpose of organization of records.  The numbers start with the parishes on the island of Shetland or Zetland in the north and run numerically to the last parish in the county of Wigtown in the south.  The parish number is important particularly when using census and civil registration records and when searching for records in Scotland.
