• Not to be confused with Pendleton County 1789-1826. From 1800 to 1826 that Pendleton County was also known by the alias of Pendleton District.

History

Pendleton District was created in 1798 by renaming Washington District.^[1] See the 1799 South Carolina Map.

Two subordinate counties were included within the overarching Pendleton District^[2]:

• Greenville County created in 1786
• Pendleton County created in 1789; abolished in 1826

In 1800 South Carolina abolished overarching administrative court districts like Pendleton District, and switched to the county concept. The remaining Pendleton County at first included all of present-day Anderson County, Oconee County, and Pickens County.^[2]

For documents of people who lived in this area at this time, look for papers filed in Pickensville, the District and County Seat, or in the County Seat at Greenville.
