The Records

Before using these records know

  1. The place where the family lived. It is usually best to know the name of the farm or parish but you may be able to make progress if you only know the name of the county.
  2. The approximate time period. If you have a death year or approximate year of marriage or birth it may be possible to estimate the time period to search.

Where to find the records

Most original records for the pre 1700 time period will be at an archive or possibly on microfilm.

How to search the records

Search by given name in most cases due to the common use of the patronymic name custom.
