Swedish Godparents (Faddrar)Edit This Page

From FamilySearch Wiki

Back to Sweden

The godparents had the responsibility to take care of the child (-ren) should something happen to the parents.

They usually represented the father and mothers families. Often the godparents were extended family or neighbors.

The term Hustru (which means wife) listed among the godparents can be misleading. The woman could be married to one of the male godparents or it can mean “Mrs” referring to her as a married woman (not the wife of one of the male godparents.)

The godparents are also known as witnesses to the christening.
