A bibliography of published unit histories, payrolls, musters rolls, and name lists found in periodicals and books (excluding local histories). It is arranged by time period, state, and county and is useful for finding names of soldiers from specific localities.

Discusses military record types created during and after service. It also discusses the holdings of the National Archives, its regional branches, and other government military organizations in and outside the Washington, D.C. area. It also contains a section on the military record holdings of each state in state archives, historical societies, and so on.

In addition to statistical data, this source also contains listings for battles of the Rebellion (Civil War) identifying place, state, and date; a list of battles in the war with Spain and the Philippine Insurrection identifying battle, date, and number of losses; and a list of wars and local disturbances between 1754 and 1848.
