James A Burgess is a volunteer at Canda America floors in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.   I was born and rasied in Huntington, West Virginia.   Graduated from Marshall University, in Huntington, West Virginia in 1971 with an AB in  History, Speech and Marketing.  Received my Masters Degree from Marshall University in  1975.   Severed in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968.

I started doing family history in 1969 when I lived in Cabell, Logan, and Kanawha County, West Virginia.  My father's family is from Logan, Wyoming, Boone, Giles, Bedford County, Virginia and from Caswell County, North Carolina.

My mothers family is from Greenbrier County, West Virginia and Fauquier County, Virginia with deep roots in the Northern Neck of Virginia.

My first book book was written in 1978 which was titled Burgess, Mullins, Browning, Brown and Allied Families.   I was deeply influenced by Sigfus Olafson and David Turner two great genealogist who had a deep love of Southwest Virginia.   They influenced my life greatly by giving me an interest in the early families that lived in Logan, Boone, and Wyoming County, West Virginia.

I created a data base for families that lived in this area.   Much of my information was provided to my by Sigfus Olafson and David Turner.

My web site will provide a flavor of my love for family history.  You may view my web site at www.virginiasurnames.com

My wife and I have been married for over forty two years.   My wife has early LDS family roots and my roots go into West Virginia,  Virginia, Delaware and North Carolina.

In August of 1996 I became the USGENWEB Web Master for Fauquier County, Virginia, USGENWEB.

Logan County and Fauquier County are places that are very special to me and my family.

In January of 2012 I started my mission at the Family and Church History Mission.

I have two email addresses jimburgess@virginiasurnames.com and jburges@familysearch.org
