What's on this Sandbox Page?

I've added various examples of coding in this sandbox that are problems for most users.

Please look at the wikitext used to create the items, but don't change it.

Hopefully, the code will help you with the wiki articles you are editing.

Note the WikiText Cheetsheet links in the sidebar for additional wikitext coding examples.

Using Span in Wikitext

 • Using Span for 150% Font Size
 • <span style="font-size:150%">Using Span for 150% Font Size</span>

Backgrounds

The wiki rarely uses dark backgrounds behind text due to the wiki Style documentation but on rare occasion, it is necessary to add them.

The command to create them are simple as seen below with the text in white and the background in blue:

<span style="color:white; background:blue">blue background</span>

In Page Links via Bookmark - hashtag

You can link to different sections in the same article by the use of a hash tag (#).

In this example, the link goes to the Images section of this page.

Here's the code that created this link: Images

Because the link is internal to the wiki double brackets are used with a pipe separating the link from the word image that appears in the sentence. The hashtag is inserted after the page address and just before the name of the section header -- 'Images' in this particular case.

Behavior Switches

For documentation, refer to the mw:Behavior Switches section of the MediaWiki page.

Word Description
__NOTOC__ (can appear anywhere in the wikitext; suppresses the table of contents)
__FORCETOC__ (can appear anywhere in the wikitext; makes a table of contents appear in its normal position above the first header)
__TOC__ (places a table of contents at the word's position)
__NOEDITSECTION__ (hides the section edit links beside headings)
__NEWSECTIONLINK__ (adds a "+" link for adding a new section on a non-"Talk" page)
__NONEWSECTIONLINK__ (removes the "+" link on "Talk" pages)
__NOGALLERY__ (on a category page, replaces thumbnails with normal links)
__HIDDENCAT__ (on a category page, makes it a hidden category)
__INDEX__ (tells search engines to index the page)
__NOINDEX__ (tells search engines not to index the page)
(changes the displayed form of the page title)
(sets a default category sort key)

Guidelines

Blue check.png This page documents a guideline. It is a generally accepted standard that contributors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense and the occasional exception.

Any substantive edit to this page should reflect consensus. When in doubt, discuss first on the talk page.

 • Guideline

Images

 • Captions only show if the image is called when either the frame or thumb parameter is used. Unfortunately, the current Rich Text Editor, overwrites the caption with the image file name whenever anything on the page is edited. We recommend you use the Captioned template (below) if you want a to add or retain a caption to an image.

Tip Post it Pin

American fork tabernacle.jpg

American fork tabernacle.jpg

Captioned Image Template

If you want to add an image that always retains its caption, use the Captioned Template.

It is very easy to use. Just call the template by name ( Captioned ), fill in the template fields with the name of the image, the size, the location you want it on the page and finally with the caption. Each item is separated with a pipe ( | ).

Example.jpg
Field of Sunflowers

Start the template with the left curly brackets ( )

An example of a fully populated template is:

That produces the image in the article on the right side, sized at 200px and with the caption of "Field of Sunflowers".

It is just that easy to use.

Image Gallery

If you are adding multiple images in a cluster, try the Gallery command. <gallery> as seen below. Click to edit this section to see how easy it was to create this gallery. Note the use of pipes ( | ) and how the commands are stacked on the page.

Full Article Width Image

The main article width of the wiki is 650px. If you include a large image prior to the article extending below the right nav bar, you need to limit the width of any image to 640px. That width will keep the image from showing under the right nav bar and will also keep text from flowing around it in a vertical rope of characters that are unreadable.

Here's an example using the full width of the text body to display the Russian Alphabet Key.

User Boxes

How to you build a list of userboxes on your User Page?

Flag of the United Kingdom.png This user lives in the United Kingdom.

Volunteers wanted II.jpg

This user is a Wiki Volunteer participating in the Help Wanted Project.
Billiongraves twitter icon.png This user is a contributor to the BillionGraves database of cemetery records.
Flag of England.png This user is of English ancestry.
Flag of Denmark.png This user is of Danish ancestry.
Broom icon.png This user likes to cleanup the wiki.
Flag of Norway.png This user is of Norwegian ancestry.
Flag of Italy.png This user is of Italian ancestry.

Start by adding this code to your userpage where you want to add your userboxes:

(Note: align right, left or center.)

Next add the template code for the user box(es) that relate to your activities, skills and affiliations.

Some examples are: User United States User Sweden GRC User Wiki Volunteer User BillionGraves User English User Danish User Wiki Maintenance etc. (Note the separation of each by a space).

End the userbox array with this code: User box bottom

The userboxes will now show on your user page and look like those to the right.

If your list of user boxes is long, you may want to include collapsible sections.

The code to add a collapsible section is easy to add with some simple code. The collapsible section for a Communities section looks like this: (See it in action to the right.)

(Note: The section description "Communities" and the link to the wiki article named "FamilySearch_Communities")

The next item to add is the collapsible box template which starts with:

An example of code for a collapsible FamilySearch Communities userbox section looks like this:

You can add as many or few to the list as you want. Just copy the code above and modify it to fit your desire.

Each new item has to start with a pipe | .... then a number in consecutive order followed by the equals sign and then the userbox code.

|1=User Denmark GRC

Be sure to close the section with two curly brackets. }}

You can have many different sections in your userbox frame. Just choose the title for each section, add the appropriate opening statement and link and then add the code for the userbox templates that you want in that section.  Close the userbox with the code shown in the above examples.

Here are two userpages that demonstrate collapsible userboxes:

General Word List

This general word list includes words commonly seen in genealogical sources. Numbers, months, and days of the week are listed both here and in separate sections that follow this list. In this list, optional versions of Czech words or variable endings (such as some plural or feminine endings) are given in parentheses. Some Czech phrases and their translations are listed [in brackets] under the most significant Czech word, not the first word, of the phrase. Words in parentheses in the English column clarify the definition.
