1609: Henry Hudson explored the region.
1643: Settled as part of the patroonship of Rensselaerwyck under direction of Kiliaen van Rensselaer
1774: The Shakers settled.
1788: Town of Watervliet founded, included all area with exception of the City of Albany.
1897: City of Watervliet incorporated, and the rest of town land as town of Colonie and town of Green Island.
- Because so many of towns were created from Watervliet, it was known as the mother of towns in the county.
