The county is named after Robert Weakley (1764-1845), Tennessee representative in the House of Representatives and later Tennessee Senator.^[3]

Parent County

1823--Weakley County was established 21 October 1823 from Chickasaw Indian Lands, temporarily subdivided as Tennessee surveyor districts 12 and 13. Organized in 1825.

Record Loss

1948--Fire damaged records

At the 1948 fire, a large number of chancery and circuit court files were discarded. They passed into the keeping of a private citizen, and in 1995 the files were given to the University of Tennessee at Martin, where they constitute MS 4 and MS 2, respectively. cf. http://www.utm.edu/departments/library/specollections/ (2010 Jul 31). Both collections have since been filmed by the FHL.
