The name Allegany comes from the Allegheny Mountains. "Allegany" itself, derived from a local Native American word, oolikhanna, means "beautiful stream."

The archives of the Genealogical Society of Allegany County, Maryland (ACGS) are held in the Appalachian Room of the Library of Allegany College of Maryland (http://www.allegany.edu/library/). Various newspapers are available mostly in microfilm format. A collection of extracts gleaned from obituaries published in local Allegany County newspapers in the 19th and 20th centuries is available on microfilm in the Appalachian Room (Call No. Apl CS68.G46.H36). Known as the Mrs. Hazel Groves Hansrote notes, the collection includes carefully transcribed notes of family relationships mentioned in the obituaries and is organized alphabetically by family surname.
Research assistance is generally available on Mondays, staff by the ACGS.
