FamilySearch This article describes the services and resources available at a Family History Center, a branch facility of the Family History Library.

The Columbia Maryland Family History Center is convenient for people in Columbia, Ellicott City, and surrounding towns, but people from anywhere are invited to visit and use our facilities.

Open Hours:

  • Monday     9am - 2pm
  • Tuesday     9am - 2pm   7pm - 9pm
  • Wednesday 9am - 2pm    7pm - 9pm
  • Thursday    9am - 2pm 
  • Saturday     9 am - 12pm

The center will be closed when Howard County schools are closed due to inclement weather or when school evening or Saturday activites are cancelled due to inclement weather.  If Howard County schools open late because of inclement weather, the Center may also open late; call 410-465-1642 before coming to make sure that a staff member answers and says that the Center is open.

2014 Holiday Closings:
May 26 - Memorial Day
July 4 is on a Friday, when the Center is normally closed anyway.
September 1 - Labor Day
November 27 - Thanksgiving
December 22 - January 1, 2015 - Christmas/New Year's Break

Databases and Software

The center's Family History Center Portal page gives free access to 15 premium family history websites which generally charge for subscriptions, including Ancestry.com, Find My Past, Access Newspaper Archive, Fold3, and Heritage Quest.

Microfilm and Microfiche Machines in the Columbia Maryland Family History Center

The center has ten personal computers with high speed Internet access, a microfilm scanner, four laser printers, ten microfilm readers, two microfiche readers, and a photocopier.

FamilySearch Catalog: Any microfilms and microfiches that you order online from the FamilySearch Catalog can be sent to the Columbia Maryland Family History Center for your viewing.

The center has more than 1500 genealogy books, more than 1500 long-term microfilm, and more than 1800 microfiche.  To search one of our center's collections, click on the link, then use "Edit > Find & Replace".  Enter the search term, such as "Jefferson County", then search.
