History

French County, North Dakota was formed 04 Jan 1873 from Dakota territory(in present North Dakota). Then on 14 Jan 1875 it was renamed De Smet. In 1883 and 1885 it lost territoy to other Benson County, North Dakota. Then in 1 Mar 1887 all the remaining territory was lost to Pierce County and De Smet became extinct. [1]
