Pelham County was never erected, nor used by any residents of North Carolina. It existed only in the minds of map makers attempting to curry favor with a secretary in the British government.

James Wimble created the first map with the fictional county in 1738. The myth of Pelham County was dragged out because of copycat maps published up to the 1790s on which the non-existent county persisted. On these maps Pelham appeared about where modern Sampson County would be today.^[1]

No one has ever resided in, nor done business with, and there have never been records of the so-called Pelham County except on maps.
