Tuscany (Toscana) is a northwest region of Italy with Florence as its capital and is divided into 10 provinces. It was inhabited in ancient times by the Etruscans and was conquered by Rome in the 4th century B.C. The Romans established the cities of Lucca, Pisa, Siena, and Florence and appllied new technologies in the improvement of roads and the introduction of aqueducts, sewers, and new buildings. Tuscany fell to many rulers and kingdoms throughout the centuries and is considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. It was the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Dante Alighieri. Read more about the region of Tuscany.

The State Archive (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) of each province is located in the provincial capital. Municipalities provided the state archives with copies of their original civil registration during the years 1809-1865.
