Hi Lynda -- someone with username User:3plaitt has unintentionally (I'm guessing) wreaked some havoc on the Surry, England pages. I'll see if I can clean it up. Murphynw 21:35, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Issues Pending

Hi, Lynda, I guess I don't really need deletion rights. I'll just use the template.

We already have project related pages. What we don't have is a page where we can track discussions that have no decisions. My desire is that we don't keep having good discussions that go nowhere, have no resolution, no follow-up.

So what if we have a page with one of those sortable tables (Steve is a genius!). It could have columns for:

  • date of discussion (linked to correct section) (entered in sortable order)
  • priority 1,2,3 -- would like to have a column for this (or something else) on the table just in case
  • category? blank until we have a few listed and can see categories discussions fall into.
  • title or very brief description
  • decision (blank if not resolved. Linked to appropriate pages if moved beyond discussion. "Tabled" if that is the decision.)

Just ideas off the top of my head. Wanting so much to have a place to not lose ideas and get back to the discussions easily. What do you think, Lynda. I really like the perspective you bring. AdkinsWH 01:58, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi again, Lynda. Everything about the table is great. The name of the page, however, should not limit the concept just to future projects. Some, maybe even most, could turn into projects, but some are just discussions, just ideas, just food for good thought. The name of the page is important. Perhaps words like pending, unresolved, unanswered do not need to be in the page name, since that info will be in the chart. And words like ideas, issues, discussions, suggestions, questions -- or something else could be used in the page name.
So playing with just those words, the page could be named: Community Discussions, Issues and Suggestions (I'm not married to that page name. Just one idea.)
What name space would this be in? Perhaps the same name space as the Community Meetings?
I enjoy running these ideas past each other. When this makes it to the meeting, their ideas will refine it. AdkinsWH 22:13, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Well, we didn't get many ideas, did we. The only one I remember is that Community needs to be in it. And you got one that said Projects needs to be in the page name? So.... what about FamilySearch Wiki:Community Discussions and Suggestions It has the implication of issues and ideas and in a way projects as well. Or should it also say "List of" or "Overview of". The word "index" is out, since it implies name indexes too often in genealogy. And it's not really a summary, so that word is out. What do you think? AdkinsWH 02:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC) PS I won't be there Thursday.
Community Discussions and Proposals is the best page name! And the FamilySearch Wiki: is the perfect name space. Thank you!AdkinsWH 15:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Ohio, Adams County

Yes.  I would delete any stubs for the Ohio counties.  Our missionaries are making good progress on the Ohio tasks.  Thanks for making the wiki better! Mcbridelw 19:32, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Delete rights

Hi, Lynda, tried to send an email, but don't think it worked.

Can you add me back as an administrator? Who do I contact, if not you?

Also, Wyzer17 (Joy Bogar) used to have rights to Delete a page, rather than simply tag one for deletion. Can she (and I) get those back? As I recall, the word Delete was under my Toolbox. Is that still correct when one has those rights?

Thanks, Lynda! You are a great discussion moderator and so encouraging. AdkinsWH 19:14, 9 January 2013

(UTC)

Wilma, sorry for the delay in answering this question.  We're in the throes of change and have been in meetings most of the day. I'm asking for an approval from Janell for these rights and will get back to you asap.averyld 22:42, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Wilma, just wondering if you need Admin rights for a special project or what? As for Joy, she has Admin rights and I'm thinking that's for editing the main page. I need to check but I think only Bureaucrats can delete pages and we were trying to keep those at a very minimum. Previously, only Tier 3 could do that. I'm asking about the Admin rights because it looks like we have a lot of people who have those and probably shouldn't. We're trying to minimize those too. averyld 19:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject

Lynda, I want to make sure that you put the User Guidance Historical Records wiki articles on the list of active projects.

Adding Images to a page

I'm curious to know why you have deleted the graphics on the Help:Adding images page.  I would think that the graphics would be helpful to anyone learning how to insert images, especially beginners.  Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words.  I know you thought the FCK editor doesn't work for inserting images, but it does.  It has not been changed. averyld 22:03, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Linda - I deleted the pictures and showed how to do things in wikitext for the very reason that I believe the FCK Editor no longer works. I once used FCK Editor all the time. Then about six months ago, it stopped working. Then a few days later it disapeared entirely from the Wiki. I have not seen it since. I have switched over to using wikitext exclusively.
If the FCK Editor still exists, how do I access it? Can you show me? I will gladly revert my changes to the article if you can show me that the FCK Editor is still there. I agree with you a picture is worth a thousand words. For that reason, I delayed for a long time making any of these changes. But I have seen no evidence that there is an FCK Editor. Can you prove me wrong?--Sabwoo 22:45, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

A few months ago when they tried to change to a new editor, some of the preferences got changed. If you go to Personal Tools and then My Preferences, you'll see an option for Editing and then down the page, it has boxes you can click for Use external editor. Make sure those aren't marked and you should be able to use the FCK editor just fine. averyld 23:04, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

You were right, it was the preferences. But not the one you mentioned. It was the one under Beta Features, called Enable enhanced editing toolbar. When I disable that one the old FCK Editor returns. I will happly revert that article to include the pictures. But I will also include what I wrote as a wikitext workaround. There is just one problem, I have never done a revert. Can you help? Thank you Sabwoo 23:34, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Digital journals

Hi Linda, How come the digital journals pages are disappearing? I'd love to move the content over to WeRelate if it doesn't belong on FamilySearch Wiki before any more disappear. Murphynw 17:00, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Linda!!! Murphynw 17:35, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Nathan, can you give me an example of a missing page?  Sandra hasn't done anything with these and I don't "think" I have, either.Lynda 21:13, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Help:How to Cite FamilySearch Collections page deleted

This page has links from every historical records collection wiki articles and those links are now dead. Please restore the page.

HawkBlade124 16:52, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I've restored it, but it was requested to be deleted by Dorothy Horan.  The links need to be deleted.Lynda 17:15, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Surrey Copyright content

The text in each page of the entire county of Surrey (England) is text which found on a copyrighted site called British History Online. Gazetteer entries may also be available in facsimile books published in UK in recent years. For this reason if you refer to use of gazeteer material online it is preferable to link to the British History Online site or to offer a transcription of relevant information. In some cases the gazetteer entry is very large and much is unrelated to " parish history". This use of text by Family History Library staff or volunteers has been permitted although it is use of copyright material. Visit any Sussex or Kent page content to see alternative parish history which does not infringe copyright.

There is also copyright gazeteer text available at Vision of Britain; this is fairly easy to spot as it contains the words

"In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described (placename) like this:"
followed by a gazetteer entry. Sometimes the year and Gazetteer author will be different but can be searched on the site.

Both of these sites are university funded academic research sites which are transcribing material from various sources for the online community and claim copyright for their work.

May I also point out that the 4 tilde system does not always enter the FamilySearch version of the wiki due to the technical failure to accept edits which UK contributors have to cope with daily; I am familiar with the system but if it is not working on some edits it is for that reason that you do not see it. Hostelry 12:48, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Sorry. I just saw this. I am going to copy your last paragraph about the tilde problem to our techs. They need to know this is an ongoing problem for you and we need specifics of other problems you are having. There will be an upgrade to the Wiki software very soon and hopefully, that will make a difference.

James Tanner posted a very good article about copyrights on his blog. Also, we are working with Historical Records to communicate better with your community in England. We truly do not want to lose you as contributors to the Wiki.

Hi Averyld,

Can you please contact me about how to do the Internal Links correctly...Actually, links to FS.org also.

Wiki Support Team Userbox

Hi Lynda, you emailed me about creating a Wiki Support Team Userbox. I have made one called {{User Wiki Support Team}}. Instructions are included on the template page, but to use it you just need to add the template code to the User page of the person in question. --Steve (talk| contribs) 12:48, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Lynda,

Thank you for being so kind.  You, you are right!  I have changed the image and so happy to do so.

Deleting NY pages

No! Please do NOT delete main New York pages. Something has gone terribly wrong. The NY pages were supposed to be displaying the proper images directly without their template workarounds. It is the templates that need deleting, NOT the main pages. DiltsGD 15:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Indexing Newsletter Page

Hi Lynda,

That link will work. Thank you for your help! My fault for not changing the link on the Resource Guide sooner. Once I get it changed, we can delete that page for good. Thanks!

Meeting change

Hi, Lynda, Perhaps it's best that you make that change for the future meetings, rather than myself, if you don't mind. AdkinsWH 02:44, 20 June 2012 (UTC) PS Lynda, you are such an asset to the team. I hope you are as pleased with your efforts as so many of us are.

Wilma, I'll go ahead and make the changes.  I didn't want to intrude, since you've worked with the page so much.  Thank you so much for the sweet compliment.  I feel so inadequate a lot of the time, but working with people like you just keeps me going. Lynda 03:08, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Watchlist stuff

Hi, Linda, The most recent update for my watchlist is

https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/How_to_Find_Birth_Information_in_Utah

(Good thing the watchlist page works.)

In my Preferences area, there is no email listed at all, and no way to enter it. (That's probably why I don't get notifications. AdkinsWH 02:54, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

No, I'm still not getting email notification. In my preferences page, the email area is still not active. Thanks for being so on top of this, Lynda! AdkinsWH 03:11, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

The staging site still shows no email on my preferences page. adkinswh@comcast.net. Thanks again, AdkinsWH 19:03, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Through email, I'm going to try to send you a copy of my preferences page. You can see the area for email does not even have a box, let alone my email address. AdkinsWH 17:05, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Pat Hardesty Watchlist

Hi Linda, I tried to send you an email to the address on this site or the box at the meeting last week. My outlook notified me yesterday, it had given up!

My preference was previously checked but the box was grayed out when I went in it.

Here is a list of my watch list:

Bond County, Illinois, CAss County, Illinois, Christian County, Illinois, Connecticut Vital Records, Fayette County, Illinois, Greene County, Illinois, Jersey County, Illinois, Macon County, Illinois, Macoupin County, Illinois, Maine Vital Records, Maryland Census, Mason County, Illinois, Menard County, Illinois, Montgomery County, Illinois, Morgan County, Illinois, Old Book and Film Numbers Used by the Family History Library, Oregon, Oregon Probate Records, Oregon Vital Records, Sangamon County, Illinois, Scott County, Illinois, Tracing LDS Ancestors, Tracing LDS Families, United States of America, Utah Census, Utah Censuses Missing and Available, Utah Vital Records, Vermont Vital Records,

Thanks for all you do!

Completed Wiki Project list

Thanks, Lynda, for taking this active roll. I like the idea of a list of "completed" projects. Perhaps they are inactive, or that the scope of their project was finished. It's got me thinking, but not with ideas as yet. Will think of this more. Thanks again, for your great ideas and follow-through. AdkinsWH 00:02, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Stakes - Summit

Hi Lynda, Thank you for your help!!!!

Summit Stake, LDS Wards and Branches is the incorrect title - therefore, it needs to be deleted and not linked.

I will make the new page for Summit Stake - It must include the word Church:

"Summit Stake, Utah LDS Church Wards and Branches".

Lynda, thank you for all the time and effort - and especially your expertise. You are a wonderful and talented person.

Thank you for liking the Main page of the Wiki!

Help Wanted Pages - Louisiana

Hi Lynda -- response to message on my page: Annette, The Wiki Support Team is in the process of adding information to Help wanted pages for each state. We are hoping that volunteers will help add content as needed for the state pages. We believe that this can be helpful to the moderators in cutting down on the work needed by you. As we get volunteers who are interested in your state, could you work with them so that they can add the information that you want added and in the way you want it added? I'll add some stubs and wanted pages to the page and you can let us know if you want anything else changed. We would hope that you would help keep the page updated as new pages are created and stubs are enlarged. Louisiana Help Wanted page. Thanks, Lynda averyld 20:47, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Would love to have volunteers for Louisiana and would be happy to work with them in any way needed. Just keep me posted about what you need me to do.

Best regards -- Annette
