Historical Facts

Washington District was created in 1791 from Cherokee Indian lands in northwest South Carolina.^[1] See the 1791 South Carolina map.

Two subordinate counties were included within the overarching Washington District^[2]:

• Greenville County created in 1786
• Pendleton County created in 1789

In 1798 Washington District was renamed Pendleton District, South Carolina.^[2] See the 1799 South Carolina Map.

For documents of people who lived in this area at this time, look for papers filed in Pickensville, the District and County Seat, or in the County Seat at Greenville.
