From FamilySearch Wiki
In 1796 the first county created by the new State of Tennessee was the reconstituted Wayne (old) County, only under the name of Carter County. In 1836 the northeast part of Carter County was divided off as Johnson County. The land on which the lost county of Wayne (old) was located is now part of Johnson and Carter counties in Tennessee.
