Congratulations go to Kimberly Finley from Canyon Country, California for uploading the 12 Millionth Source to FamilySearch Family Tree. Her winning source was a marriage record posted to the record of Jeremiah Burrell, who is Kimberly’s great great grandmother’s cousin.
Although Kimberly has a deep love for family history work now, she didn’t always feel that way. She got her start back in 1995 when her father asked for her help finding information about his grandfather’s family. His grandfather played a big part of raising Kimberly’s dad, which created a sense of commitment to finding all he could about his grandfather’s family and doing what he could to preserve a memory of them. Kimberly’s dad shared many wonderful stories about his grandfather with her. After on and off efforts with her father, Kimberly put her research aside to do other things with her life. As her father lay on his death bed, she made a promise to find his family. It was not a fun experience for her but she kept at it. Following his death in 2007 she started again in full force and hasn’t stopped since.
Her research has not been as simple as some who have easy to follow lines. She’s spent many hours trying to track down some family members who ran into trouble with the law back in Kansas in the late 1800s. This family decided it would be best to move far away and change their names to discourage anyone from finding them. Of course, that created all kinds of challenges for Kimberly as she tried to piece together this part of the family tree. But with time and a great amount of patience and divine inspiration, Kimberly was able to piece together the history of this secretive family.
Time to do research is not easy to come by for this 46 year old Californian. Kimberly has 6 kids, 4 of whom are still at home. She’s also going to college to get two degrees; one in administrative assistance and a second degree in computer program applications, as well as studying to get her certification in medical administration. If that isn’t enough, she is also working as a College Assistant tutor at the College of the Canyons, which is a local community college.
Kimberly served in her local ward as a family history consultant from 2008 to 2010. She was terribly disappointed when she was released from that calling to do something else. But Kimberly and her mother are both still very much involved doing family history work; Kimberly working on researching her family lines and her mother busily doing Indexing.
So, for a woman who didn’t like doing family history research, Kimberly Finley has done more than many people. She now professes a deep love of family history and is committed to doing research for as long as she can.
Congratulations Kimberly for submitting the 12 millionth source to the Family Tree. Your father would be very proud to see this honor come to you.
