Imagine sitting at your computer just in time to tune in to a live stream of a speaker you’re excited to hear. It’s a beautiful day, and you can even hear birds chirping outside your window. You click play on the website, but for whatever reason, the livestream doesn’t work!

Has this ever happened to you? Technical glitches can happen to anyone, but there are some things you can do (even right now!) to help ensure you don’t have issues streaming #RootsTech 2015.

Here are five steps to ensure a smooth #RootsTech 2015 live stream experience.

  1. Be in a place with a good Internet connection. If you already know your Internet connection can be dodgy, consider watching the conference somewhere else. You can go to the library (bring headphones) or stop by your aunt Molly’s place. Wherever you go, be sure you’re using an Internet connection you can trust.
  2. Make sure your computer’s operating system and Java Flash Player are up to date. Now is a good time to pay attention to those sometimes annoying reminders to install updates on your computer. Bite the bullet and take the time to update before you watch #RootsTech. You’ll be glad you did.
  3. Check your speakers and sound connection. Sometimes you can turn off your sound without remembering. We all do it. Test your speakers or headphones before the big day. You don’t want to spend time trying to fix the sound when you could be listening to A.J. Jacobs.
  4. Have multiple devices ready, and be sure your device is plugged in. It’s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket and when it comes to streaming, backup devices can save you a lot of time. Batteries die, computers and tablets freeze, and phones can lose Internet connection. If you have backup devices ready, you’ll be ready to enjoy #RootsTech 2015 even if the worst happens. Also make sure your devices are plugged into a power source while you are watching the live stream.
  5. Be 20 minutes early. The #RootsTech website is designed for a quick and easy live stream setup, but you never know what glitches might occur. We recommend setting up a live stream connection up to 20 minutes before you want to tune in. That will give you plenty of time to set-up and fix minor tech glitches. What if you set up early and everything runs smoothly? Then you can relax knowing your live stream of #RootsTech 2015 is ready when you need it.

Naturally, this is not an all-encompassing list, and most of you will be able to enjoy the live stream without any complications. By running though those five steps before the conference, however, you’ll be able to make watching #RootsTech a pleasant live stream experience.
