Extra, Extra, Read All About It! When I hear this phrase I think of the musical Newsies, where paper boys shout the headlines to sell the daily paper. But more than selling papers, it’s a powerful story of what can be accomplished when people unite together for a common purpose. From this movie I love the song “Seize the Day,” where one phrase stands out to me:
“Arise and seize the day.”
These young men joined forces to right a wrong and to defend their freedom to work for an honest wage and to tell their life story.
At FamilySearch we love these stories of personal and family history; we are driven to capture and preserve them, along with the records of individuals that tell who they are and where they came from. At some point we all have a curiosity about our roots. Each of us will have different situations that pique our interest in family history, but at some point each of us will be driven to know our heritage. Once this interest is piqued, the more records a person can readily get his or her hands on will help with the search.
With great anticipation, we are excited to announce the approach of a major FamilySearch milestone coming in early spring of 2013. One day soon, FamilySearch indexing will hit one billion records arbitrated in less than seven years.
Arbitration is the last step in the indexing process, every record is indexed twice and then those records with discrepancies are checked a third time by an arbitrator. Over three billion records have been indexed and arbitrated to reach this milestone. Impressive!
Billions of records have been published on FamilySearch.org making over 3 billion names available for research. This has been a collective volunteer effort involving many hands and hours of service beginning with extraction and increasing in momentum with cooperative indexing.
What will this milestone mean for those researching their families? There are more records readily available on FamilySearch than ever before, but we are not finished! We have just scratched the surface of the mountain of records we want to make freely available for future research.
Billions of records published means billions of stories, billions of lives that connect and intersect with our lives and the lives of many others. We challenge you to join the cause to connect the dots, to find out your story, and to help others find theirs.
In the words of Newsies:
“Now is the time to seize the day.
Send out the call, and join the fray.”
“Send out the call.” Participate in history and join with thousands of others who, like you, are searching for the link connecting them to their ancestors. Invite others to “join the fray” and volunteer as a FamilySearch indexer.
Look for more information to come in 2013 as we approach this monumental milestone.
