Come Enjoy the Holiday Season When Visiting the Family History Library

Christmas at Temple Square

If you were thinking of taking some time during the holiday season to visit the Family History Library or the FamilySearch Center in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, save some time to enjoy some of the local holiday events that are taking place. When you need a break from your research, take an hour or so and enjoy some of the fun holiday activities in easy walking distance from the library.

Please be aware that the Family History Library has a special holiday schedule in place. From the middle of December through the first week in January, the library will have early closing hours. They will be closed the entire day on Christmas Eve, Christmas day, New Years and on Martin Luther King day. Check the schedule of library hours to see when the library will be open during the holidays.

Temple Square is now a wonderland of festive lights and nativity scenes. Visitors can enjoy the lights, watch the Christmas story unfold outside the South Visitors’ Center, and listen to local musicians perform.

The Christmas lights, displays, and performances will run from November 26 to December 31, with special activities and performances held December 29-31 to celebrate New Year’s. All “Christmas on Temple Square” events and activities are free. See the calendar for more details.

The Church History Museum and the Pioneer Heritage Company have partnered again this year to produce “Pioneer Christmas: A Time for Celebration.” This family program will be held in the museum auditorium on Saturday, December 7, 2013. Performances will begin at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. For reservations call 801-240-9573. Learn more about this celebration by clicking here.

Through much of the month of December through December 21, high school choirs throughout Utah will perform in the Church Office Building lobby as well as the Joseph Smith Memorial Building lobby. They perform at noon and again at 1pm each weekday. Check the schedules located in the lobby of each building for specific times each choir will perform on any given day.

Across the street from the Joseph Smith Memorial Building is the recently completed City Creek Shopping mall. They have plenty of family friendly activities including a Santa Claus, lots of eating places and Christmas shopping in a climate controlled environment to keep you warm and happy. Visit their website to see what activities they offer.

This is a great time to come to the Family History Library and the surrounding area. Bring your family along and prepare for a great time.
