Great news for those planning to be in the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana for the FGS Conference, August 21-24th! FamilySearch has announced, in partnership with the Allan County Public Library’s Genealogy Center, free scanning of books and photos for those in the area. You are invited to bring your books of genealogical information to the Center for free scanning. Your publications will be added to the current 100,000 books online at FamilySearch.org. They are found clicking the Search link and then clicking the Books link in the Family History Books collection.
The majority of the books online are family histories with a smaller portion made up of cemetery records, local and county histories, genealogy magazines and how-to-books, gazetteers, and medieval histories and pedigrees. These valuable aids are viewed by more than 100,000 people a month.
Starting on Monday, August 19th, during normal library hours, the scanning center at the Allen County Public Library’s Genealogy Center will be operational for walk-ins with books. Bring your photos starting on Wednesday, August 21st. Scanning will continue until Saturday at 3 p.m. when the FGS conference ends. Bring your items early as those scans not completed by the end of the conference will have to be returned to you by mail. You will be provided with a copy of the scanned images of the books and photographs you lend to the project.
The Allen County Public Library’s Genealogy Center and FamilySearch are especially interested in:
- Autobiographies and biographies containing genealogical material
- Family histories with genealogical information
- Indexes to records
- Local and county histories
Please keep in mind that permission must be obtained from the author of any published book or the copyright holder before copyrighted books or photos can be scanned (books published before 1923 are generally in the public domain). There is no limitation on the size of books that can be scanned but photos should be no larger than 8.5×11 inches.
FamilySearch will have a booth at the FGS convention in the Grand Wayne Conference Center to answer questions you may have about the scanning project.
The Allen County Public Library and its Genealogy Center are found on Webster Street, just around the corner from the Grand Wayne Convention Center where the FGS Conference is being held. It’s a 4 minute walk!
