Many members of the LDS Church are creating accounts on FamilySearch without using their membership number. They usually do this because they don’t have their membership number handy. When helping a member create a new FamilySearch account, consultants need to remind members to add their membership number to their account. The number can be found on their temple recommend, on the LDS tools app, or they can ask their ward clerk to provide that number for them. Including their membership number during the registration process is very important.
When someone includes their membership number to their FamilySearch account some great things happen.
- The information from their membership record is used to automatically create the foundation of their Family Tree. In most cases, when a member has created an account using their membership number, they will see their own personal information automatically added to their tree as well as the information about their parents, their spouse and their children. If they do not provide their membership number, Family Tree does not have a way to gather that information. That means that they will have to start from scratch and manually add their personal information in order to build their Family Tree from scratch.
- By providing a membership number a member will be able to prepare information in their Family Tree and clear it for temple work directly from their tree. Without a membership number you will not be able to submit a name for temple work.
- When you include your membership number, your search results will be far more productive. Because of agreements made with some of our partners, members of the LDS Church have free access to collections that those who are not members of our Church won’t have access to. So, by providing your membership number, FamilySearch will give you access to record collections and search capabilities that can significantly improve your searching power.
If you have already created a FamilySearch account without including your membership number, you can easily fix your account and add your membership number to it. To learn how to make this change, read Change a FamilySearch Public Account to an LDS Member Account.
